Dump the Pressure and Fall in Love with Life
It was the 2016 Golden Globe Awards. Comedic actor Jim Carrey strolled on stage, grinning his vaguely devious signature grin. As the audience’s applause roared, he began his awards presentation with this:
“Thank you. I am two-time Golden Globe–winner Jim Carrey. You know, when I go to sleep at night, I’m not just a guy going to sleep. I’m two-time Golden Globe winner Jim Carrey going to get some well-needed shut-eye.
“And when I dream, I don’t just dream any old dream. No, sir. I dream about being three-time Golden Globe–winning actor Jim Carrey. Because then I would be enough. It would finally be true, and I could stop this terrible search for what I know ultimately won’t fulfill me.”
I love that both because it makes me laugh and because it paints such an accurate picture of how we relate to goals. We focus on what we don’t yet have, haven’t yet done, and whom we don’t yet know, and set goals to “fix” the lack we feel. In that process we put our critical voice in charge, so even when we do achieve our goals, we quickly find new ones to measure ourselves against.
We cycle through this process repeatedly, not because we want to torture ourselves, but because we’ve been taught to navigate the process backward.
In this chapter we’ll first look at traditional goal setting and how it can keep us stuck. Then we’ll explore a more authentic and powerful approach to moving our lives forward.
